Lower School Book Week

Lower School Book Week

The Lower School spent last week exploring and celebrating books.  Year 3 were following the world of Hiccup in ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ and Year 4 the adventures of Grandpa in ‘Grandpa’s Great Escape’.

Margaret Bateson-Hill author and story teller spoke with both year groups about her published works, displaying her love of stories and taking the chance to give boys a crash course in paper cutting.

Sarah Gibb, a professional illustrator and author took the Year 3 boys through painting their own dragons, including sharp talons and golden fiery breathe!  We welcomed parent readers, reading a range of childhood favourites, who took time to read and discuss their books with their son’s class.  D.E.A.R (drop everything and read) sessions were very popular and will continue throughout the year.

The week finished with a fantastic dress up day.  Boys across the Lower School came dressed in their favourite book character costumes, ranging from James Bond to Hedwig (from the Harry Potter series).  The staff were also fully involved with Heidi and Alex Rider (in disguise) making an appearance.  It was a delight to see the effort put into each costume and the pride shown in the boys’ faces.

The day ended with poetry reading from Mrs Kube-Clare and Mr Grieve, and also the results of the ‘Read It’ competition: with over 32,000 pages read over the one week! Finally, prizes were given for the best costumes – a favourite being Grandpa from Grandpa’s Great Escape, complete with a fully equipped Spitfire!
