Spring Choral Concert

Posted: 28th March 2019

Southwark Cathedral was, once again, the magnificent setting for the Spring Choral Concert.  The boys’ choirs were joined by the Choral Society to present works including the iconic Requiem by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.  Following a welcome from Senior Choristers James and Samuel, the evening began with Verdi’s Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves.  This is a personal favourite of Mr Roulston and was included to mark Michael’s final Choral Concert as Headmaster. The Lower School boys took the stage to present an energetic and engaging rendition of Jubilate by Jay Althouse.  Judging by this powerful performance, the future of choral singing in the Middle and Upper Schools is in safe hands.  It was, however, an electrifying and near faultless performance of Mozart’s Requiem that gripped those listening and it dominated the evening.  Superb singing both from choirs and soloists, together with wonderful orchestral playing, left the audience in awe.  A ‘surprise’ encore was the inclusion of Londonderry Air arranged by Bob Chilcott.  An Irish piece for a departing Irish Headmaster.  A very special moment – after which Mr Roulston took the microphone to thank the choirs for acknowledging his support for choral music during his tenure as Headmaster.  The boys’ choirs, ably supported by the wonderful Adult Choral Society, deserve the highest praise for an evening of performances that would grace any major concert platform.  A simply stunning evening of choral singing.
