Instrumental music lessons are taught at Dulwich Prep by a team of well-qualified full-time and visiting music specialists.
Over 85% of boys from Years 2 to 8 take up tuition on at least one instrument with many having a second and third area of study.
Boys in year 2 may take tuition in piano, violin and cello (in exceptional circumstances some boys may commence in the final term of Year 1) with the full range of orchestral and band instruments, voice, percussion and guitar becoming available in year 3 upwards. Theory of music is also taught on an individual basis.
Lessons are taught on a rotation system thus keeping disruption to academic lessons to a minimum. Second and subsequent areas of study are fixed outside the academic timetable wherever possible.
Tuition consists of 30 half hour lessons per academic year. Fees for the visiting instrumentalists, who are self employed, are charged in advance – the current rate being £225 per term of ten lessons. Fees for lessons given by the full-time staff are charged in arrears. Music bursaries are occasionally available and are subject to a musical assessment by the Director of Music and the availability of a full-time member of staff to take the lessons.
There are musical groups catering for boys of all standards ranging from Pre-Prep Strings through to a full symphony orchestra. Boys will be invited into an ensemble, band or orchestra when they reach the appropriate standard. There are over 25 instrumental groups and 4 choirs.
