Two teams of Prep boys headed to KCS Wimbledon on Monday 25th November for the South London Regional Heat of The Kids' Lit Quiz. In this annual literature quiz for students aged 10-13, teams of four students are asked to answer 100 questions on children's literature divided into ten categories, which vary each year. Contestants ponder questions from almost any genre including comics, poetry, nursery rhymes, classics and contemporary fiction… this year we even had a fiendishly difficult round on riddles from literature! Teams work collaboratively to answer each question put to them by the New Zealand Quizmaster, Wayne Mills.
Our two teams, with five boys from Year 6, two from Year 7 and one from Year 8, were amongst the youngest of the 45 teams in the room. They were not remotely daunted however, and performed magnificently with each team winning one of the 10 ‘Round Prizes’ (for the highest score in that round)! We are still awaiting the final score sheet, but we know that our team comprising James C, Gabriel S, William B and Leo C finished comfortably in the top twenty. The astonishing news however, was that our team of Zach H-A, Debe, Joseph M and Daniel O’C won the competition!
The quiz currently has heats in New Zealand, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Canada, the USA, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Indonesia, and winning teams qualify for national and world finals. There are 18 regional heats in the UK and, as the winning team from the South London region, we will compete in the National Final next week. The UK winning team will be invited to compete in the World Final in New Zealand in July 2020.
Massive congratulations to all eight boys. It was a wonderful afternoon in every way and, along with nearly 200 other avid readers, our students were buzzing with excitement in an event that is truly an affirmation of the power and joy of reading.
