Last night, the Middle School musicians took to the stage for the first time this academic year, providing the audience with a varied and entertaining evening of musical delights.
The Junior Orchestra commenced the proceedings with a rousing medley of Handel and Beethoven’s most famous works: The Hallelujah Chorus and Ode to Joy, made even more impressive by the fact that it was performed entirely from memory – what a fabulous introduction to the evening!
The Jazz Band under the energetic direction of Mr Coates, then transported us to 1950s and 60s’ America with two classic Jazz tunes featuring a number of the boys taking improvised solos, showing us that the Dulwich Prep, London Big Band of the future is in very safe hands. Mrs Hewitt-Jones then delighted the audience with two pieces from the Year 5 String Group and the virtuosic Haydn’s ‘Allegro in G’ from the Year 6 Quartet.
A particular highlight of the evening was the stunning vocal duet, ‘Pie Jesu’ from Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s ‘Requiem’ performed by Zac and Henry in Year 6.
The evening was brought to a resounding close by the Junior Concert Band performing two of the most iconic melodies from the band Queen ‘We will rock you’ and ‘Another one bites the dust’ and rock us they did!
The standard of music witnessed this evening was of a superb standard and would not have looked out of place among performers of a much greater age. We very much look forward to hearing the boys again later in the year.
Well done boys!
