In their annual February concert, the Middle School boys, with some guest performers from Year 7, performed splendidly with a lively and varied programme. For many in Year 5, it was the first performance in a mixed orchestra or band situation. The Junior Orchestra opened the evening with 3 items including a rousing arrangement of the theme from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. The Jazz Band set toes a tapping with 2 items – with Funky Town receiving cheers from an enthusiastic audience. The Year 5 Strings entertained with two contrasting pieces. The quartet, as part of Purcell’s Trumpet Tune, shows enormous promise. For the second year running, we heard a Year 6 Saxophone Group, a quintet, which played 2 lively pieces. Ek Se by Abdullah Ibrahim was particularly exciting. This was followed by the Year 6 String Quartet, fresh from the Pro Corda Festival, which played a splendid Haydn Allegro. The Junior Concert Band concluded the evening in fine style and our percussionists took centre stage in a fun arrangement of the theme to The Addams Family. The Band took an encore on behalf of all the evening’s performers.
Many thanks are due to the teachers who work with these groups and ensembles. Congratulations to all the performers – the future of ensemble and group playing is in safe hands. This was an event of which much older children would have been proud and the audience ovation received at the concert’s conclusion was richly deserved. We look forward to your next concert in June.
