The weekend before last, 22 Year 6 boys travelled to Ireland to experience a different brand of rugby. It was fantastic to see the boys embrace the experience and learn the value of team work both on and off the field.
After arriving safely on the Friday, the boys had an early night so they could prepare for the first game on Saturday morning at Willow Park. It was a tough encounter for both teams. Initially the physicality and skill level of Willow Park was simply too much. However, the boys fronted up to the challenge. With a sense of desire and resilience, the boys were inspired to step up a level mentally and physically, allowing for a much improved performance as the matches went on.
An afternoon of bowling and arcade games allowed the boys to relax and take their minds off the rugby for a while. Later on, after some down time at the hotel, the boys had a moment of reflection allowing them to evaluate their performance as individuals and as a team. A TGI Friday’s dinner and a good night’s sleep set them up to face Blackrock RFC.
Sunday’s performance demonstrated a much higher level of focus, skill and team work across the squad. They developed a stronger mentality and positive attitude towards the game. Their rugby skill set and mentality will be much stronger as a consequence of this tour.
Well done to all the boys for their efforts and thank you to those parents who made the journey to Dublin to support the boys.
