The year 7 creative DT rotation had a wonderful visit to the Victoria and Albert Museum. We had talks by people in the film industries, car designing and product design. It was very interesting as we all want to do these jobs, none of us can decide!
When we arrived, we walked through an enormous hall, full to the brim with beautiful Roman statues. After gazing at them, we moved on to a lecture with two interesting men in the car designing industry. They talked about how they do their job, how they design all the cars and how they have to incorporate the size of the wheels, passengers, the engine and all the technical parts. They then showed us what they think the cars in the future would look like.
After that, we were told it was time for lunch – that was time to talk about what we enjoyed and to eat. Our group walked through the silver gallery, we then stumbled across this stamping machine where we could stamp the V&A logo on a piece of metal. The next talk was about the film industry in Pinewood Studios. This speaker was an expert in film sound, and because he had been in the business for so long, he could tell us practically everything! He told us about the developments the film has to go through, and how the sound editors take 2 months to develop the sound in the film! Can you believe that? Khiani asked a great question; he asked if the directors film real explosions in films or are they computer generated. The answer was, if it is a big budget movie, it is often real but for smaller films they use ‘library sound clips’.
When the talk had finished we had to rush to another talk (my personal favourite) which was about product designing. The designer was from Fay Toogood: an amazing design company. We saw how the designer worked from simple, sketch models made from clay or cardboard, then drew accurate drawings before having the products made in factories all around the world. The designer showed us his plate design, his beautiful bronze stool and his amazing limestone fireplace that looked like cloth but had been cut using a 3D printer.
Overall, quite a brilliant day, lots to think about for the future now!
