Pre-Prep Curriculum

In the Pre-Prep, Years 1 and 2, the curriculum builds on the excellent foundations laid in the Early Years section. The characteristics of effective learning continue to form an integral part of each boy’s academic development and underpin every aspect of it.

Specialist teaching is extended beyond Music and Physical Education to include Drama, MFL (French and Spanish) and Computing. Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE) is also introduced as a discrete specialist lesson each week.

Areas of learning

The core subjects are taught by class teachers with an assisting adult in a programmed and tailored manner, geared towards all abilities and learning styles. There is a strong emphasis on maths and English with the teaching of phonics, using the Read Write Inc Programme. Topic-based teaching is introduced at this age in order to help provide real-life context to learning for each boy. Our exciting topics motivate, challenge and inspire and are designed to specifically engage boys.

Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural education is delivered to the boys through assemblies, clubs, school council and the curriculum. We encourage parents and grandparents to take part in various events during the year including workshops, class assemblies and cultural days and to join in partnership to assist with their child’s education.

We work to nurture the right culture and conditions to allow the boys to flourish, not only during their time in Pre-Prep, but by building their character and values to excel in life. Our ethos is underpinned by both our Values and our Characteristics of Learning. Staff promote these and this in turn influences the behaviour and attitudes within the school. The boys and the way in which they learn is at the heart of all endeavour.
