Spring Choral Concert at Southwark Cathedral

Posted: 8th March 2016

Southwark Cathedral was, once again, the magnificent setting for this year’s Spring Choral Concert.  The Senior and Chamber Choirs were joined by the 70 strong adult Choral Society to perform two major works.  The Lower School Voices also made their annual contribution.

The concert opened with a fun cantata retelling the story of Noah – Captain Noah and his Floating Zoo by Flanders and Horovitz.  In many musical styles, the familiar story unfolds and the choirs clearly enjoyed the fun that the composer and lyricist were trying to engender.

The Lower School Voices joined for the final two numbers and helped bring the piece to a resounding conclusion. The Lower School boys remained in position to sing a beautiful piece, Remember Me by Bob Chilcott, written in memory of the children who lost their lives in the attack on Utoya in Norway in 2011.

The evening’s main work was the Missa in Angustiis or Nelson Mass by Haydn.  This jubilant setting was enjoyed by all and the adult Choral Society has rarely sounded better.  The boys showed vocal dexterity and coped brilliantly with the Latin and the demanding nature of the music.

The soloists were splendid, including our own Mrs Rachel Chambers who sang the soprano solos with poise and style.

All but one member of the wonderful professional chamber orchestra had a connection with the Prep; either as a current istrumental teacher or Old Boy and, in one case, both!

This was a magnificent celebration of Choral Music and congratulations go to all who participated.
