Admissions

The Admissions team are delighted that you are considering Dulwich Prep London for your son or daughter. Boys can begin their time with us when they are 3 years old and stay until they are 13 in Year 8. Girls stay for Nursery only. Our main entry points are Nursery (age 3+ for boys and girls),  Reception (age 4+), Year 3 (age 7+) and Year 7 (age 11+).

A few additional places may arise in other year groups from time to time, so do get in touch to check if spaces are available.

As a possible future school for your child, we would like to extend a warm welcome and guide you through the next steps.

Nursery (3+ Entry)

Nursery (3+ Entry)

Boys and girls start in September when they are three years old and have their fourth birthday in this academic year (between 1 September and 31 August). Most children come to school full-time, but some are part-time, mornings only, in the first term. The ratio of boys to girls is approximately 5:1. After Nursery, the girls move on to other local schools.

Children are observed playing in small groups in the classrooms, and our staff engage them with a variety of resources, such as construction toys and role-play. In addition, we usually have a short music session and finish with the children sitting together and listening to a story.

We ask parents to provide a copy of their child’s most recent school report, and with parent permission, we will contact each child’s current setting. We understand that some young children will not be attending a nursery before visiting us, and we are happy for prospective pupils to bring in a toy to share with us if this would help them to settle.

Whilst the children are playing, parents stay for tea or coffee, and staff are available to answer any queries.

In our assessment, boys are invited to spend half a day with us. There are papers in Mathematics and English (including comprehension and story writing), and boys will complete verbal and non-verbal reasoning tests on a computer. We also hear the boys read and allow them to play and look around the school. Boys also have the chance to play ball games in the sports hall and join in some fun singing in the music department. Each boy meets the Head of Lower School (Years 3 and 4) for an informal chat. In addition, the Heads of Years 3 and 4 and other Dulwich Prep London staff meet the boys in various contexts throughout the day. Lunch is provided for the boys.

Parents are invited to join the Head Master for coffee when they drop the boys off for their assessments.

We ask parents to provide a copy of their son’s most recent school report, and we will also contact each boy’s current school to ask for a reference before the assessment takes place.

Year 8 (12+)

We would normally only accept boys into Year 8, the final year at Dulwich Prep London if they already have an offer at a senior school.

Every child is unique, and we are looking for children who will flourish in our environment and take full advantage of our outstanding provision. Our assessments are designed to allow each applicant to demonstrate their strengths and include a wide range of elements beyond simple ‘tests’. We want our pupils to enjoy every moment of their time with us, beginning with the assessment day for prospective pupils.

We want to feel confident that all our pupils will be happy and successful within our school and that they will be able to access the curriculum. To this end, all children are assessed so that we can look at their potential and their attitude to learning. Our normal minimum for admission is above the average level of attainment for each age group, based on the National Curriculum.
