Adventures in Normandy

Posted: 8th June 2016

Now in its third year, on the Monday of half term the French and History trip, made up of 28 boys and 4 staff, headed off to Dover to catch the ferry to Calais. As usual, we stayed in the beautiful Château du Broutel, located only an hour from the ferry port. Despite the weather being challenging at times, the boys threw themselves into the plethora of activities on offer with great gusto.

The French activities included some shopping in a local market, mayonnaise making with the Château’s very own head chef, as well as visits to a chocolate factory and a ‘Biscuiterie’.

On the historical front, we visited various First World War sites of interest, including the Lochnagar crater, the WW1 museum in Albert and the humbling Thiepval memorial, dedicated to those soldiers whose bodies were never found. Particularly poignant was finding the inscriptions of various Prep Old Boys on the walls.

The boys were also involved in a range of outdoor activities such as rifle shooting, kayaking, crate stacking and fencing, as well as various others. Once again both boys and staff alike returned in great spirits after a busy and rewarding trip. A la prochaine!
