Last week, on Friday night, the Drama Studio was turned into a home of all manner of bogeymen as the boys from 8C and 8H came together to perform an anthology exploring the topic of Monsters through poetry, prose, song, and even a dance!
With illusions aplenty around the room – people appearing from empty wardrobes, disappearing in beds, and even emerging from hidden crevices around the studio – the piece was a magical journey through various mythical beasts, supernatural creatures, and even a surprise visit by The Gruffalo.
The boys took detours through Robert Louis Stevenson’s “The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde”, Shakespeare’s “The Tempest”, Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” and Bram Stoker’s “Dracula”. Light relief was provided by excerpts from Shrek and Monty Python and the Holy Grail, classic poetry such as Lewis Carroll’s Jabberwocky and Jack Pelutsky’s “The Bogeyman”, and the boys all fully embraced a dance routine for “The Monster Mash” that they created themselves. A version of Richard O’Brien and Richard Hartley’s “Over At The Frankenstein Place” finished the evening, with some boys singing solo lines for the first time in public.

The boys have compiled some of their thoughts of the Y8 project, and what better way to sum up the project than through their own writing:
“After this project, I want to audition for more things in the future; before this, I hadn’t really been in a major role in a play” – Kai, 8C
