Dulwich Prep London was transported to Wonderland on Tuesday 12th December when the term’s Middle and Upper School Play took to the stage for its production of Lewis Carroll’s perennial favourite, “Alice In Wonderland”. With a cast of 28 boys from Years 5-8, the audience were transported into the madcap dreamscape that Alice floats through as she tries to make sense of her reveries, featuring famous characters from literature such as the Mad Hatter, Cheshire Cat, Caterpillar and – of course – The Queen Of Hearts.
Performed in the Concert Hall, the piece had a minimalist design, influenced by the chaos of Alice’s dreams, with a distinct flavour of playing cards throughout. The characters, brought to life through masquerade masks and beautiful physicality, were larger than life; a full set of grotesques! Alice lead the cast with a sensitive and urgent sense of wonderment. With an entire cast so talented and committed, it would be invidious to mention individuals, but the entire company performed terrifically as an ensemble and brought every character to life professionally and energetically.
The Autumn Term play is now entrenched as a school custom, and it is wonderful to see boys from all years taking part in a diversity of roles.
