Diwali at the Prep

Posted: 5th November 2019

Before the half term break the boys in Middle and Upper School celebrated Diwali festival by drawing wonderful chalk rangoli patterns throughout the school grounds. Diwali is a five day festival of light that is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and some Buddhists (this year it began on the 27th October).  Every autumn, the observance sees millions of people attend firework displays, prayer services and festive events in celebration of the occasion, which signifies good triumphing over evil, light over darkness and new beginnings.  In Powwow groups – a mix of Y5-8 pupils in each tribe – boys and staff at DPL worked brilliantly in teams to let their creative juices flow.  During Diwali, these colourful patterns are drawn by the front door of homes to encourage the goddess Lakshmi to enter. They are traditionally drawn using rice grains, flour, sand or chalk, and are usually inspired by nature.
