Iceland

Posted: 6th November 2019

Twenty one boys and three staff ventured once more to Iceland during half term.  The five day trip included exploring the remarkable South Coast with an overnight stop near Vik with views of the Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands), the Golden Circle and the Western Fjords and Borganes.

The group encountered all seasons during their stay, from gales force winds and rain to lightly falling snow and temperatures of minus 10 in the bright sunshine.  Along the South Coast highlights included the magnificent waterfalls of Skogafoss, Seljalandsfoss and the hidden gem of Gljúfrafoss.  An awe inspiring visit to the rapidly retreating Sólheimajökull glacier, was capped with the spectacle of glacial calving.  The sights of Gullfoss, Geysir and Þingvellir were added to with a stop at Efstidalur for organic ice cream.  The penultimate day saw the group venture into Iceland’s largest lava tube, walking amongst the remains of viking outlaw camps and lava formations, with the odd Icelandic saga thrown in.

During this short visit the boys and staff also took in some Icelandic pastimes, including snacking on hotdogs and trips to the local geothermal swimming pool and the Secret Lagoon.

Sadly the Northern Lights were just too dim to see, maybe next year!?
