Maths Day at the Early Years

Posted: 22nd March 2018

Mrs Barrick masterminded an incredible Maths Day on Friday.  The children had been really creative arriving in school dressed in an amazing assortment of maths based outfits.

We started with an assembly to introduce the theme of the day, ‘Maths inside Story books’. Then, in the hall, the children attempted a roundabout of maths challenges based on the three books, the ‘Hungry Caterpillar’, ‘Jack and the Bean stalk’ and ‘Harry and his Bucketful of Dinosaurs’.  Some of the activities included trying to find different ways to measure a giant, who just fitted in the hall, estimating how many dinosaurs Harry kept in his bucket and working out how much food the hungry caterpillar actually ate! Sixteen brave Year 8 boys came to help run these games with our children.

The fun did not stop there as the whole of Year One came to Early Years to play maths games with our Reception boys. But it did not matter which class you entered, maths was happening everywhere.  Just some of the activities included, children making numbers from multilink or ordering numbers as far they could go, building really tall towers and tackling number problems. Everyone went home tired and happy after such a lovely busy day.
