Maths Day at Early Years

Posted: 11th March 2020

maths-4

Maths Day took place in Early Years on Friday 6th March.  The children arrived dressed in lots of different outfits with a maths theme; there were hats and bands with numbers or shapes and one boy had been transformed into a dice.

We started with an assembly to introduce the theme of the day, Maths inside Books. Each class had the opportunity hall to attempt a roundabout of maths challenges based on well-known stories – The Hungry Caterpillar, Harry and his bucketful of dinosaurs, a Pair of Socks, Jack and the Beanstalk, Elmer and Crash Boom. Some of the activities included trying to find different ways to measure a giant, who only just fitted in the hall, estimating how many dinosaurs Harry kept in his bucket, then ordering these by size and using squares to make a tessellating pattern to cover Elmer. Two brave Year 8 classes came to help run these games with our children.

The fun did not stop there as the whole of Year One came to Early Years to play maths games with our Reception boys. Maths was happening everywhere on this special day. Just some of the activities included, children making numbers from multilink or ordering numbers as far they could go, building really tall towers and tackling number problems. Everyone went home tired and happy after such a lovely busy day.
