Job Description

Two passionate and experienced Visiting Music Teachers (VMT’s) are required from September 2024 to teach piano or cello across the ages of 6 – 13 years (rising to 16 years by 2027) on a self-employed basis.

As a VMT you will be responsible for planning and delivering high-quality and engaging music lessons, fostering a love for music and supporting your pupils’ musical development.  Specifically, VMT’s at the School:

  • Develop and implement comprehensive music lesson plans aligned with ABRSM or Trinity music examinations
  • Conduct individual and group lessons, catering to different learning styles and abilities
  • Encourage pupils’ participation and engagement through interactive teaching methods and activities
  • Assess pupils’ progress and provide constructive feedback
  • Prepare their pupils for performances, concerts, and other musical events
  • Produce written (digital) reports on each pupil twice a year.

Experience of teaching in the given age range, and of preparing pupils for ABRSM or Trinity music examinations, is desirable. An ability to play piano for the cello VMT will also be advantageous but not essential.

In the forthcoming academic year we anticipate there being circa 15 piano pupils (equivalent to one full day or two half days of teaching) and circa 10 cello pupils (approaching a full day of teaching).  The aim is to teach 30 lessons per pupil across the academic year. Weekly / termly timetables of music lessons are prepared by the School; the ability to offer regular days each week is desirable.

VMT’s are self-employed, invoice parents directly each term, and set their own charge rate. A hirer’s charge of £1 per pupil per lesson is payable to the School in exchange for access to, and use of, the School’s facilities.  In line with the School’s safeguarding protocols, statutory vetting checks – including an Enhanced DBS and checks with current and past employers – will be undertaken.

We are an equal opportunity employer and welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds. We believe in fostering a diverse and inclusive work environment where all employees are valued and respected for their unique perspectives and contributions. We encourage applicants from underrepresented groups to apply for any of our available positions.
